Preparing for your newborn session

Congratulations on your new baby!!  Thank you so much for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new little mini in his/her first few days of life.  Newborns are my passion and I consider myself truly blessed to be around these little miracle so much.

What to expect

For Baby

Before the shoot, please feed baby 2-3 hours prior, and plan on feeding him/her as soon as you get here.  Also, please try not to let the baby sleep beforehand.  Instead, try giving the baby a bath, let him kick unswaddled, tickle their toes, and even let them fuss a little bit beforehand.  This will ensure a super sleepy baby and those adorable squishy, sleepy newborn pictures.

I cannot stress enough that it's so important to do your best to keep the baby awake.

Many parents come in saying "baby has been sleeping all morning, but trust me, he sleeps SO good this time of day!" only to have baby wake up as soon as they are unclothed and unswaddled.

It will be at least 80 degrees in the studio.  Due to this, I will be dressed for a warm few hours and suggest you do as well!!

Sessions last between 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if baby is a light sleeper, or is hungry!  The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottlefeed as needed.  If formula feeding, please bring enough food for multiple feedings!!!

If you can, bring the soothie pacifier the hospital sent you home with.  It's the bendable, green/blue/orange one, and won't leave marks on the babies face.  Even if you are choosing not to give your baby a pacifier, just for the 2 hours that I'm posing him/her it usually really helps.

Props

I have everything needed for the session.  Blankets, hats, headbands, wraps, etc.  Everything is wash using hypoallergenic soap on a sanitize cycle before every session.  Some parents choose to bring special items to the session such as; passed down baby blankets, hand made gifts from family/friends, or anything that is meaningful and significant in your life.  Feel free to bring that special item!

For Mom & Dad

Mom & Dad, you are a big part of the show.  Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of my all time favorite things.

Dads: Please bring a tight fitting solid colored t-shirt to wear.

Moms:  Please bring a simple tank top to wear.  Keep the color neutral and design simple.  Be sure that you have no nail polish as your hands will make their way into the images.  Also, rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and light to bring out the natural beauty in your family.

For siblings

Including older brother/sister(s) in your newborn's portraits is the perfect way to document this fleeting time in your lives.

Sister(s): Please bring alonga snug fitting tank in a neutral color.

Brother(s): A snug pair of jeans and shirtless is preferred.

A few additional thoughts

If siblings will be joining you for the session, I have a TV, books and some toys.  Feel free to bring a favorite toy and a couple snacks to help pass the time.  Some parents choose to arrange for the siblings to be picked up by a grandparent after we have taken their pictures.

It is my hope that you come to the studio feeling comfortable and at home.  I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby!!
